Pohnpei is taking a major step toward sustainable ocean stewardship through its partnership with Blue Prosperity Micronesia (BPM). In December 2024, President Wesley Simina, Governor Stevenson Joseph, and Waitt Institute Chairman Ted Waitt signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) committing Pohnpei State to the BPM program and supporting 30% marine protection within its waters.

 

This agreement launched the development of a Marine Spatial Plan for Pohnpei’s nearshore waters (0–12 nautical miles), designed to ensure the sustainable use and conservation of marine resources. Led by the Pohnpei State Government, the planning process will leverage scientific data and be shaped by community input.
