MARINE SPATIAL PLANNING

Under the Blue Prosperity Micronesia program, Kosrae State is developing a holistic Marine Spatial Plan to sustainably manage its coastal and marine resources.

In 2024, the Kosrae Marine Spatial Planning Working Group drafted a set of Principles, Goals, and Objectives (PGOs) to guide the planning process, establish a foundation for decision-making, and reflect Kosrae's vision for a healthy and productive ocean.

In addition to marine protected areas, the Working Group identified several key priorities to support both conservation and economic development:

  • Renewable energy

  • Aquaculture

  • Tourism

  • Sustainable management of nearshore fisheries.

OCEAN USE SURVEY

The BPM Ocean Use Survey was an important first step in understanding how communities in Kosrae use and value their ocean spaces.

To ensure the Marine Spatial Plan reflects local needs and priorities, the survey team gathered 624 responses representing 1,598 individuals.

These insights are now helping to shape a holistic and community-driven plan for managing Kosrae’s coastal and marine resources.
